Buyer FAQ

Tent Fabric FAQ: Technical Questions for Shelter Sourcing

Concrete answers for buyers comparing coating, lamination, hydrostatic pressure, tear strength and sampling requirements.

What hydrostatic pressure is appropriate for camping and shelter tents?

For light rain fly and tent-wall projects, 1,000–3,000 mm may be discussed first. For emergency shelters, canopies or longer exposure, 5,000–8,000 mm is often a better starting target. Final selection should consider seam design, expected rain intensity, packed weight and the buyer’s test method.

When should PU coating be selected instead of PVC lamination?

PU coating is usually preferred when the project needs a softer hand feel, lower weight and better packability. PVC lamination is useful when a stronger water barrier, robust coated surface or heavy-duty cover performance is the priority. The final route should be confirmed by sample, hydrostatic pressure test and folding/handling review.

How is tear resistance specified for wind-exposed tent panels?

Start with the fabric position: rain fly, side wall, ground-facing panel or frame-stressed area. Wind-exposed panels often need ripstop yarns, stronger denier or Oxford construction. Ask the project team to confirm tear method, target value, fabric weight limit and whether reinforcement tape will be used.

Can tent fabric include flame-retardant and water-repellent finishes together?

Yes, some supplied routes include flame-retardant PU coating plus DWR. The key is to confirm the target FR standard, water-pressure requirement and hand feel together, because coating chemistry, after-treatment and washing conditions can affect each other.

Which construction is suitable for military or emergency shelters?

IRR nylon, ripstop structures and higher-strength coated Oxford fabrics are typical candidates. Share the colour or camouflage requirement, infrared requirement if any, hydrostatic pressure, tear target, packed-size limit and order quantity so the team can narrow the route quickly.

What information is needed before sampling tent fabric?

Provide the end use, target country, required standards, preferred base fabric, coating or lamination route, colour or print, hydrostatic pressure, flame-retardant requirement if any, quantity, sample size and expected deadline. This helps avoid sampling a fabric that looks right but misses the technical target.
